Going to a Halloween party in a Cardinal costume would certainly be a one of a kind outfit.  Non-Catholics don’t necessarily know what a Cardinal is – well outside of the St. Louis Cardinals or the Cardinal that is the bird – other than they hear of the “College of Cardinals” who elects the new Pope when the old one dies or resigns.  During the sede vacante, which is the time the Cardinals gather for the conclave to decide the new Pope, it’s the Cardinals who govern the church on a daily basis.  These Cardinals are Bishops where are assigned on permanently to a specific church as the principal of the church.  Going to the party as a Cardinal would certainly be a blessing for everyone else there.

The Costume Fit for a Bishop

The Cardinal costume is quite vestments that include the Alb, which is the long white robe with the tapered sleeves and gold trimming.  This is white to represent innocence and purity.  Over the Alb is a very striking red and white velvet mantelletta, and has the two white stoles that are trimmed in gold and have a red velvet cross at the bottom of the stole.

The next part of the vestments is the Mitre, which is the normal headdress that the Bishops wear.  The Mitre is very tall and made of the matching red velvet and white damask of the stole and Alb.  The detachable clerical collar is also included – can’t be recognized as a Bishop without the collar.  Add the rosary beads, and the Cardinal is all set to bestow blessings on everyone at the party.

This outfit comes in one size and typically is priced at around $50.

Not Just Another Cardinal

A second option is one with the long white Alb with the tapered sleeves and the gold buttons.  It also has a gold brocade lame mozetta, and it comes with a white cincture that represents chastity.  The matching white Mitre hat also has white brocade trimmed in gold.  Add the rosary beads and the outfit is complete.  This costume comes in one size and also sells for around $50.

Other Accessories

Since most Cardinals don’t go stomping barefoot around the Vatican, add a pair of white loafers with the brass buckle.  These shoes are available in sizes from eight to size 15, and sell for approximately $45.
